FG Plans To Restore The Teaching of History In Schools

The Federal Government said on Thursday that it would commence processes to restore the teaching of history as a subject in primary and junior secondary schools.

President Goodluck Jonathan said this when he received the Historical Society of Nigeria at the Presidential Villa, Abuja,

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the leadership of the association had requested the president to restore the teaching of history in primary and junior secondary schools.

Jonathan promised to meet with the stakeholders in the education sector to discuss the process of restoring history as a teaching subject in schools.

He noted that it is important that Nigeria’s history was well documented.

The president also disclosed that the Federal government was building a centenary city which would have a presidential archive for past presidents and heads of state.

The archive, he said, would help children to get the best eye-view of history.

The president approved a plot of land for the society to build its headquarters, but said it would have to source money for the building.

He urged his Chief of Staff to ensure that the society was inculcated in the forthcoming national conference.

NAN reports that the society which has been in existence since 1955, conferred the president with the title of Grand Patron. (NAN)
