2014 NUGA Games: OAU Football Team Trash EKSU 4-1

The result of OAU vs EKSU at the ongoing NUGA Games is 4-1. The Obafemi Awolowo University football team walloped their EKSU counterpart by four goals to one in the opening game.

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) defeated Ekiti State University (EKSU) 4-1 in the opening game of the 24th edition of the Nigeria’s bi-annual inter-university sports competition football event.

A first half brace from captain Ayokunle Faleti and second half strikes from Ajibola Olarenwaju and Lukman Yusuf ensured the hosts threw down the gauntlet to the rest of the country that they are serious contenders for the gold medal.

Ekiti State University dominated possession in the early stages of the game played at the Obafemi Awolowo University Sports Complex but careless tackles in their penalty area cost them two penalty kicks in the first half that were smartly converted by Ayokunle Faleti.

In the second half, OAU dominated every department of the game and got the third through a volley from Ajibola Olarenwaju. EKSU managed to get their lone goal no thanks to a defensive mishap from the hosts while Lukman Yusuf sealed the win for OAU in the closing stages of the encounter.

“It is a good start to the competition and we hope to keep winning in other to achieve our aim of winning the gold medal,” coach Egbunu-Olimene told Goal after the game.

In other matches billed for Sunday, University of Lagos (UNILAG) will face University of Jos (UNIJOS) while University of Benin (UNIBEN) will trade tackles with Bayero University Kano (BUK). Other pairings will see University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) challenge University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) as Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) will take on Kano State University of Science and Technology (KUST) in the last fixture of the day.

The Scorpions of OAU’s next game is against the University of Calabar on Wednesday.
