Vice Chancellors Are Immune To Sacking From The President And Governors

The President and Governors in Nigeria who are usually Visitors to Nigerian Universities have been told that they have no constitutional powers to sack a Vice Chancellor without the case going through the Governing Council of the affected university.

Aare Afe-Babalola

He also voiced out that it was improper to appoint Chairmen of Governing Councils of universities on political basis or political views, which end up crippling the university system. He was of the opinion that Pro-Chancellors should see the universities as  an avenue to make positive contributions to the development of education, not as an avenue for making money.

He cited several constitutional provisions and university Acts in his 54 page lecture and reminded Visitors to universities that the process of appointing Vice Chancellors was through the Governing Councils of such universities and should always permit Governing Councils to handle the discipline and had court rulings to back up his argument.

On Vice Chancellors, Aare Afe Babalola told Vice Chancellors to familiarize themselves with the laws of the university, doing their best without fear.
