ASUU Finally Suspends Strike? Might Not Come Soon!

For students wishing for ASUU to finally suspend strike embarked upon on the 1st day of July, 2013, well, I don’t know where I want you to put your wishes or hopes. This ASUU Strike might not be suspended soon as Lecturers are standing their ground this time that FG must provide all their demands before they call off the strike.

Another reason why I’m kind of pessimistic is that we have been hearing different things from different government representatives. The minister of education has come out to say that ASUU demand would be met soon and the strike would be suspended or called off. Then came a contrary message from the Minister of Finance who know more about the status of Nigeria’s treasury that FG does not have resources to meet ASUU’s demands which she claims a N92bn demand is part of.

ASUU has come out thought to reject that statement, saying it is totally untrue as they only demanded for N87bn. With this ongoing, the chairman of Negotiations with ASUU, Gov. Gabriel Suswam would tell the press progress is being made.

All that said, ASUU is also accusing of NUC for siding the Government in this matter. They believe NUC should be on the side of Lecturers. The statement made by NUC Executive secretary, Prof. Julius Okogie, that tuition paid in Nigerian Universities are too small might be part of what angered ASUU.

Finally, for ASUU to suspend the ongoing strike or call it off, they (ASUU) have said government must meet 100% of their demands and ASUU has also asked it’s members to reject the Results of Post-UTME Screenings conducted during the strike.

Do you think ASUU would suspend or call of the strike soon? Share your thoughts!
