The PUNCH reports with authority that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called off its eight-month strike.
The decision was made at the conclusion of the National Executive Council meeting, which was held at the ASUU secretariat in Abuja, our correspondent learned, however the union has not yet made an official announcement.
A knowledgeable source within the NEC confirmed the cancellation to our correspondent, “Yes, it has been called off.”
When asked for more details, the source said, “the president will release an official circular in the morning”.
Reactions to ASUU Strike Suspension
A student who asked not to be identified said to the BBC that the strike has wasted 8 months of their life:
That’s eight months wasted out of my life, and what did the strike achieve?
Rev. Chris Okotie also said we should not be celebrating the end of the strike. Nigerians were forewarned to seek a long-term solution to ongoing strikes rather than celebrating the end of the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ protracted strike action.
The challenges we have now is that a group of politicians congregate as legislature to be making laws in specialised areas they know little about. That’s the truth behind labour disputes in the country.
