ASUU (UNIABUJA Chapter) Embarks on Indefinite Strike

ASUU of UNIABUJA Chapter has embarks on an indefinite strike action. They want all issues facing the University to be resolved by the appropriate authorities but nothing has been done. They also claim that the vice-chancellor in April 2013 checked off their dues as it is mandated by the Trade Union Act and some levies but the fund had yet to be remitted to the union’s account.

Details of the ASUU, UNIAbuja Strike as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria:

ASUU UNIABUJA

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, University of Abuja chapter, has begun an indefinite strike to protest against developments in the institution.

The Chairman of the branch, Mr. Ben Ugheoke, announced this to journalists in Abuja.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, lecturers of the university took the decision at a congress on Monday.

Ugheoke said the Federal Government on July 16, 2012 constituted a visitation panel to resolve issues affecting the institution but till date the White Paper has not been released.

Ugheoke alleged that facts available to the union showed that funds allocated to the institution were being misappropriated.

Ugheoke also alleged that varsity authorities deliberately refused to pay their teaching, marking, supervision and professional allowances dating back to 2010.

The ASUU chief said, “The vice-chancellor in April 2013 checked off our dues as it is mandated by the Trade Union Act and some levies but the fund had yet to be remitted to the union’s account.”

“He later stopped the check off dues from May 2013 claiming that there was a circular to that effect.

According to him, the VC did that because he wants to cripple the union.

“We feel that the White Paper should be released so that the university through its council would effectively implement its recommendations immediately because many issues are contained in it,’’ the chairman said.

  1. He urged the vice-chancellor to clear up the problems he had created before vacating the office –
Let the Vice Chancellor vacate his office immediately because the problems he had created simply demonstrates his incompetence as an administrator of a university in the 21st century. The man is more of a traditional ruler than a Vice Chancellor. In fact, if you make the present traditional ruler of University of Abuja a life-time Vice Chancellor, he will never solve any of the problems he had already created, but would create more problems for the institution. He has no idea of what a university entails. So, it will be abnormal to ask him to clear the problems he had created before leaving the office.
