Niger Delta University Lecturers Embark On Indefinite Strike

“In recognition of the financial and psychological effects of the non-payment of salaries since January 2016, the congress hereby resolves to stop work henceforth until all outstanding salaries accruable are paid,” the lecturers announced in a resolution.

“We also call on the State government to pay all salaries of staff not paid since 2013. The State government is also called upon to revoke the obnoxious practice of promotion without financial benefits.”

The resolution was preceded by an address by the Vice President of ASUU, Professor Biodun Owoyemi. He briefed members on the outcome of his team’s meeting with the State Deputy Governor, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah, and the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Humphrey Ogoni.

He described NDU as a university that has been abandoned and lacks the necessary infrastructure befitting of a university. Prof. Owoyemi condemned the lack of perimeter fencing, senate and administrative buildings, and internal roads. He called on ASUU members to be steadfast in insisting on their rights.

The National Executive Council of the ASUU has about 48 hours to ratify the resolution of the lecturers.
