NOUN Matriculates Over 1,400 Students

The National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, has matriculated over 1,400 students who applied for various degrees and programmes.

The vice chancellor, Prof Vincent Tenebe who was represented by the director of the centre, Magaret Boro, stressed the need for students to try the option of NOUN as against conventional universities which have over time disappointed candidates due to over stretched facilities leading to poor access.

He said “Young people were not coming here before because they thought it is a school for the elderly. But today, they are coming even for their first degrees. Capacity in conventional universities is inadequate and so they come here.”

He revealed that contrary to celebrated rumours that the institution does not graduate students, Tenebe said “the students are graduating and even serving contrary to earlier reports.”

On the issue of course registration, the vice chancellor encouraged the students to download course materials and not to depend solely on the one given by the school. He said “course registration is paid for just like in conventional universities and so course materials are not birthrights” as they are in soft and hard copies as well as online, he emphasised.

He solicited for more funds from the federal government stressing that “the institution has been expanding and for us to be able to absolve all our candidates, funds are needed for expansion.”

While debunking reports that substandard qualifications are accepted by the institution, the VC said “We take nothing less than five credits including maths and english and any other three subjects required for the preferred course of study.” Source: Leadership
