The Authority of Veritas University of Nigeria has disclosed that it has been given approval by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to begin doctorate programmes in Political Science and Economics.
The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Rev. Fr. Prof Hyacinth Ichoku who disclosed this yesterday in Abuja during an interactive session with the press added that already the institution had started post graduate programme in MSc Accounting, Micro Biology, Political Science among others.
According to him, the university at present has a population of two thousand students noting that admission is done based on the bed space available.
“We don’t want any of our students to stay outside the campus hence our decision to admit students based on the available bed space. But as am speaking to you admission is ongoing because we have made provision for more bed spaces and that is because we want to monitor the activities of the students closely.”
Speaking on the lecture, Prof Ichoku said it is aimed at celebrating the first professor the university has produced stressing that the university has come a long way.
The Guest lecturer, Prof. Gabriel Egbe is a professor of English language who also the first professor the institution produced.
Speaking at pre-inaugural briefing, Prof Egbe who said he wouldn’t like to pre-empt his lecture titled, ‘of New Englishes and New Literacies’ however argued that English language is a language of invasion stressing that no nation can claim its ownership.
According to him, there is no universally accepted English and as such Nigeria English should be apologetic.
