Suspected Killer of UNICAL Lecturer Arrested by Police

Suspected killer of UNICAL Lecturer, Dr. Godwin Iwatt has been arrested by men of the Nigerian Police force. The suspect is a student of the school. he goes by the name Ikechukwu Uche.

Men of the Homicide Unit of the Cross River State Police Command have arrested a University of Calabar final year student of the Department of Microbiology who allegedly shot and killed Dr. Godwin Iwatt, the Examination Officer of the department in May.

The student identified as Ikechukwu Uche was arrested in his hide out in Calabar South by the police and has made confessional statements to the police to the effect that the shooting was done in company of three other students who are still at large.

Uche, a police source told CrossRiverWatch was traced through the threat text messages he was sending to Dr Iwatt that he was going to eliminate him for refusing to clear his backlog of carryovers for the courses he failed to enable him proceed for National Youth Service Corps alongside other members of his class.

According to the source, the suspect was traced through his gsm number with which he used in sending threats to Dr Godwin Iwatt and Dr Maurice Ebong. “When he was arrested he denied knowledge of the shooting but when he was confronted with the phone number used in sending the threat messages, he confessed that he was the one who did it along with three others”.

The Cross River State police spokesman, Hogan Bassey confirmed the arrest of Uche to CrossRiverWatch but said “We do not want to give too much publicity to the arrest of the suspect because investigations are still in progress and other culprits who are still at large may go underground making it difficult to make their arrest difficult”.

It will be recalled that Dr. Iwatt was shot in his office in May. He was rushed to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, UCTH where he died after some days.
