UNILORIN Student Union Clamps Down On Errant Shops

Following series of complaints by the students of the University of Ilorin, the Price Control Committee of the University Students’ Union has closed down over 30 shops in the University for selling sachet water above the approved price of N5.00.

The University management had pegged the price of a unit of Unilorin sachet water at N5.00 while a bag goes for N70.00.

Members of the Students’ Union Price Control Committee, led by AbdulRahman Ahmed, raided shops at Zamfara Hostel, University market, University Car Park, the Walkways, the new Faculty of Education Complex and the Faculty of Arts lecture area, sealing off those found to be selling sachet water above the approved price.

Many of the affected shop owners, however, complained that they were forced to sell their sachet water at N10.00 because they got their supplies from outside the campus since the Unilorin Water Enterprises that is supposed to supply water to them on regular basis could not cope with their demands. They therefore urged the company to improve on its water production and on the amount of kiosks covered daily.

The Students’ Union Welfare Secretary, Comrade Muhammed Lawal, said, “The Unilorin Water Enterprise is working just to break even so that students of this great citadel of learning can enjoy Unilorin water at a very cheap price compared to what obtains outside the school. And don’t forget that it is the responsibility of the Students’ Union to enforce the sales of sachet water to all Unilorites for a sum of N5.00 per unit.”

Comrade Lawal vowed that the Students’ Union would not relent until all shop owners comply strictly with the approved price.
