UNIOSUN NASU Backs Governing Council Over VC Sacking

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions UNIOSUN chapter, has described the recommendation of the Governing Council of the university for the sacking of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bashir, Okesina, as a welcome development.

The NASU Chairman, Mr. Isaiah Fayemi; secretary, Suleman Olugbeja; and the treasurer, Mrs. Fisayo Ojeleke, signed the statement on behalf of the union.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities earlier, in a statement, had condemned the recommendation for the sacking of the VC.

According to ASUU, the recommendation of the council headed by Prof. Gabriel Olawoyin (SAN) is prejudicial because the Visitor to the university, Governor Rauf Aregbesola, has constituted a Visitation Panel to investigate the crisis rocking the institution.

The ASUU Chairman, Dr. Oluseye Abiona, said the council ought to have exercised restraint because the panel had submitted its report to the governor who had the final say on the matter.

However, the NASU warned the governor not to rescind the council’s decision, saying it would amount to subversion of justice.

The union’s statement read, “ In consideration of the Governing Council’s action, it is established that the council has acted within the ambit of the Osun State University (Establishment) Law of 2006, taking into consideration item 1, a, b and c ( removal and discipline of academic and administrative staff) page 27 of the law.

“Contrary to the opinion in some quarters, the Governing Council has equally acted within the ambit of the Osun State University ( establishment) Law of 2006, taking into consideration items 3,(1) page 44 of the law which says:

“The vice-chancellor shall be appointed or be removed by the Visitor upon consultation with the council, hence the Governing Council’s recommendation to the Visitor in respect of the vice-chancellor is in tandem with the university law.”

NASU urged the governor to make public the recommendation of the Visitation Panel led by Prof. Adebiyi Daramola, who is the VC of the Federal University of Technology, Akure.
