The management of the University of Port-Harcourt (UNIPORT) has stated that UNIPORT is not resuming on May 23rd as earlier stated by the university authorities. It can be recalled that the University authorities earlier made a statement about the University’s resumption date. Authorities of the University of Port Harcourt have since withdrawn their earlier announcement that the institution will re-open for academic activities on Monday, May, 23 2016.
The University’s initial statement was withdrawn by the Deputy Registrar in charge of Public Affairs, William Wodi when he released a new statement on behalf of the University. The statement revealed that the Monday 23rd May resumption date was a proposal that had not been approved by the university’s Senate body.
It also revealed that the University’s Senate was expected during its 421 extraordinary meeting, to consider the proposed revised academic calendar for the 2015/2016 session of the institution and that the senates decision will be made known to the students and the general public in due course.
Quoting the Deputy Registrars statement, he said “I wish to use this opportunity to state that the University of Port Harcourt is desirous of returning the University to resume normal academic activities. We are desirous of allowing our students to continue the reason why they were admitted into the University.
“I wish to state categorically and without any avoidance of doubt that the academic calendar of the 2015/2016 session will be uploaded on the website of the University and announced in the mass media when it is duly approved by the Senate of the University.
“I want to use this medium to call on parents and students to discountenance our earlier call that stated that the University will be on May 23rd of May, 2015”
The Deputy Registrar appealed to parents, guardians, students and concerned stakeholders to discountenance the May 23rd resumption date pending an official memo from the institution.
