UNN Plans To Raise N6Billion For The Training Of Doctors

The search to raise N6bn endowment fund to improve on infrastructure for better training of doctors at the University of Nigeria has begun.

The UNN College of Medicine Alumni made this known in Enugu, on Wednesday.

The body said that it has slated three days homecoming activities for the alumni, which will create a forum for raising the endowment fund.

The body said no less than 3,000 of its members, from April 3 through April 6, would participate in series of activities.

It noted that it would use the opportunity to give back to society some social and health services.

“We shall also use the period to educate the masses on health tips and seek help to improve the infrastructure of the college,” said Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Prof. Ifeoma Okoye.
Speaking with The PUNCH, Prof. Okoye said the homecoming was designed to empower, inspire and establish business relationships in a professional networking atmosphere.

The LOC chairman said it also affords the alumni opportunity of bringing back the the university to see the state of infrastructure and aesthetics of the college since it was moved to the permanent site at Ituku/Ozalla, Enugu State, in 2007.

Okoye lamented that the college was moved into shabby structures at the permanent site without hostels, lecture halls and library.
She disclosed that students are still ferried about from the three campus of the college, which results to auto crashes sometimes.

She admitted that the administration of the institution has done about 40 per cent of the jobs required there, but said that more still needed to be done.

“That is why we are soliciting through the homecoming, philanthropists and some of our Alumni who can help come to the aid of the college of medicine.

“We are calling them back to use the platform to reach out to other philanthropists and organised bodies to come to our help. We can do more if we have the good environment.

“We are also using the opportunity to give back to the society and to reach out to the population to give them education on some health challenges,” Okoye said.
