We Didn’t Change the Name of the School – FUNAAB Pro-Chancellor

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of the University, Chief Lawrence Ayinde Olakunle Osayemi has described as erroneous, impression in certain quarters that the University has changed its name, following the recent transmutation from University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (UNAAB) to Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB).

He declared that the University has only adjusted to its true name – Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB).

Speaking at the 16th Annual Convention and 15th Annual Lecture series of the University Alumni Association, Chief Osayemi who is the Chairman of the occasion insisted that the University remains the same from inception in 1988; noting that it will be out of place for anybody “to be comparing FUNAAB with what happened in UNILAG”.

According to the Pro-Chancellor, “what happened is that there was omission in the name of the University from inception. What we have in the Act establishing the University from day one is Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) and not University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (UNAAB)”.

He stressed, “in one of our council meetings, after thorough deliberations, we felt we should identify the name of the University properly in line with the Act establishing it and that led to adjustment to FUNAAB”.

Speaking further, Chief Osayemi said “As a matter of fact, one of our highly placed Nigerian whose name resonated here called me and told me that the name of the University is not properly put. And truly our name at the time negated the provision of the Act establishing it. We didn’t changethe name, it was a wrong normenclature that we hitherto attached to it”.

The Pro-Chancellor stressed that “there are Federal, State and Private Universities. Federal Government made a pronouncement that there should be a Federal University in each state and Ogun State has got FUNAAB, we can’t afford to relegate the federal status in our University to the background, especially now that we are now conventional”.

“Doing so will mean that all the new Universities will attract products of our catchment areas to the Federal normenclature”, he added
