FG Meets SSANU, NASU, Varsity Researchers Suspend Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Research Institutions has called a halt to a strike that began in October over unresolved issues with the federal government.

The union made the announcement in a letter to Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, signed by Theophilus Ndubuaku, the union’s Secretary-General.

The strike will be suspended immediately, according to the letter.

The letter read in part, “The Academic Staff Union of Research Institutions hereby writes to inform you of our decision to suspend, with immediate effect, our ongoing strike.”
The union also reviewed and noted the progress made so far by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment and other Federal Government agencies in resolving the issues in dispute, according to the letter.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has resumed talks with the Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Associations of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union in an effort to reopen public universities that have been closed due to strikes by various industrial unions.
